Ten Things to Know Before the First Day of GW Middle School

  • School Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. 
  • Bus service will not be perfect on the first few days. If you have concerns alert ACPS Transportation via your student’s grade level admin.

  • Set up a cafeteria account.  To put money into account, write a check made payable to “GW School Nutrition Services,” with child’s name on it.  Alternatively, you may use  All free and reduced cost lunch information will be included in the welcome packet the first week of school. 
  • PE uniforms consist of a t-shirt and shorts.  During the first few weeks, your child will be asked to bring in $20 dollars for that uniform.  Don’t expect to see much of this uniform. It tends to stay in the locker throughout the year. 
  • If your student will be late or absent, call GW 703-706-4500 and ask for your child’s grade office to alert the school. 
  • If you need to take your child out of school for an appointment, buzz yourself into the rear entrance of the building, then go to your child’s grade office to sign out your student at that time.  To return to school, have your student bring a written note from the doctor and sign in at the office. The parent does not need to accompany the child into school.  
  • There is a NEW cell phone policy. All personal electronic devices are to be turned off and stowed away in a safe place for the entire school day.

  • Checking student grades can be easy.  Signup for PowerSchool and Canvas online.  All information can be found at
